Same chip, same battery size, and a ¥1,000 gap at the entry tier. The iQOO 16 is the better phone. The RedMagic 12 Pro+ is the better gaming device, and that difference is worth about 1.8% on a benchmark.

Here is where the money goes.

What the fan actually buys

At the RedMagic's launch event, nubia put an AnTuTu score of 5,670,006 on the screen, which was the top score in the database that day. iQOO's own figures for the iQOO 16 came out at "557万+", so about 5.57 million.

Same silicon, at least 100,000 points apart. That 1.8% gap is the entire measurable return on the active fan, the dual-loop liquid system, the embedded liquid metal 4.0 and the graphene heat spreader. The RedMagic's cooling fluid is the same fluorinated liquid used in AI servers, rated to work from -60°C to 108°C, and the pump pushes it through twin loops at 130 kPa from a 20 mW drive.

Over a long session the gap stops being a benchmark number and starts being frame stability. A phone that throttles halfway through a match gives you a worse picture of the chip than one that does not. That is the real argument for the RedMagic, and for a competitive player or a streamer running long sessions it is a real argument.

Where the iQOO wins, and it is not close

Cameras. The RedMagic has two rear sensors and no telephoto of any kind. The iQOO 16 has a 1/1.3-inch 50MP main with optical stabilisation, a 50MP Sony periscope with 3x optical zoom and OIS, and a 50MP ultrawide, plus a 32MP front camera that records 4K. If you photograph anything that is not a game screenshot, the RedMagic does not compete.

Display sharpness. 3168×1440 against 2688×1216. Both are 6.85 inches, and both are fast, but the iQOO's panel has roughly 40% more pixels and runs at 165Hz with a local peak of 10,000 nits against the RedMagic's 5,000.

The headphone jack. The RedMagic keeps a 3.5mm port. vivo's own spec sheet for the iQOO 16 states the headphone jack is Type-C and that only Type-C digital headsets are supported.

And the price, at every tier:

Config RedMagic 12 Pro+ iQOO 16 iQOO saves
12GB+256GB ¥6,999 / ¥6,499 after subsidy ¥5,999 / ¥5,499 ¥1,000
16GB+512GB ¥7,999 / ¥7,499 ¥7,499 / ¥6,999 ¥500
16GB+1TB ¥8,999 / ¥8,499 ¥8,499 / ¥7,999 ¥500

(The RedMagic also previewed a 24GB+1TB Golden Saga limited edition with forged-carbon cooling. Price unannounced.)

Buying outside China

Here the ranking flips, because availability flips it. The global RedMagic 12 Pro drops the Plus from its name and is being announced in the United States on 3 November at 7am EST, with imports already listed at $1,299. The iQOO 16 has cleared EEC certification and iQOO has been teasing an India launch for November, but no global release date has been published, and the only way to buy one today is an import listing at $999.

Whichever route you take, the Chinese price advantage evaporates into shipping, tax and warranty, so the real question becomes which spec sheet you want. And the spec sheet says the iQOO 16.

The verdict

Buy the iQOO 16. Same 2nm Snapdragon, same 8,400mAh, a real camera with a real zoom, a sharper and brighter panel, and ¥500 to ¥1,000 back in your pocket. You give up the headphone jack and 20Hz of refresh rate. You get a periscope telephoto.

Buy the RedMagic 12 Pro+ if you are the kind of person who games for two hours or more a day, or if you need the 3.5mm jack, the 185Hz panel and the 80W wireless charging badly enough to pay for them. nubia's claims of 10 mainstream titles running 2K and 185Hz with super-resolution and frame interpolation at once, 200-plus titles with the frame generation alone, and the Ubisoft certification it announced at the launch are exactly the kind of thing the iQOO cannot match.

But the fan is not a lifestyle. A phone that cannot take a photo of your kid's football match is a bad phone, and the iQOO 16 has a periscope where the RedMagic has nothing.
